San Miguel de Allende Experiences
Meet Your Guide: ESMERALDA BRINN
Move over papas fritas… we’re going to show you how fresh Mexican-style snacking can be!
Your guide is San Miguel-born Esmeralda Brinn, a chef with a passion for locally grown and wild-foraged produce. Together you will wander through the central Mercado Ignacio Ramirez and nearby streets tasting and learning about traditional “plant food lovers” street food snacks.
These healthy snacks are what Mexicans grab and eat on the street when there is no time to sit and have a full meal. Some of them are so local that not even Mexicans from the rest of the country know them. Others you might recognize, yet at the same time, it’s unlikely you’ve experienced them as fresh, or in these special preparations.
Learn, from a Chef, the secrets to snacking like a local – healthy, delicious and fun!
Meet Your Chef: Esmeralda Brinn
The mercado is the hub where commerce and community meet. While the restaurants of Centro Historico may have meat-heavy menus, we’ll show you that for local San Miguelenses, plant foods are a big part of the diet.
Your guide is Esmeralda Brinn, a chef with a passion for locally grown and wild-foraged produce. Together you will wander through the central Mercado Ignacio Ramirez tasting seasonal local produce, and traditional “plant food lovers” street food snacks. Leaving the market, you’ll take a short walk with some special stops to explore more and to refresh on some regional fruit “nieves” (fruit/water-based sorbet)
Along the way, you will be picking up a variety of prepared food items, all home-made by local women from plant food ingredients, many of which are hand-harvested. With flair and ingenuity from your chef-guide, you’ll learn how to use these to prepare a quick, fresh meal on the fly, with only a few extra basic ingredients, and of course, you’ll sit down to enjoy that meal together.
As on all of our tours, this is not just a journey for the palate, it’s an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the culture, from farm to market to plate. (or tortilla, as the case may be!)
